On June 27th l'Alliance Française hosted
its seasonal Club de Conversation. The event which featured francophone moderators provided an opportunity for
non-native speakers to practice their French. The Alliance staff set up several tables to accommodate guests. Each
table contained several copies of France-Amérique as well as assorted
nuts, wine, soft drinks, water, and orange juice.
"L'Argent est sale,"
said a Frenchman from Marseille. Discussion topics ranged from business, international politics, leisure, and sport.
A lively debate explored the differences between American and French politics. The conversation stressed the difficulties
of comparison between the two governmental systems (French and American). Clearly, the American right wing is quite
different than that of France, and similarly with the left. In terms of money, all money is France is dirty said
one Frenchman. He said the perception dated back to traditional views held by the Catholic Church. Another participant
responded, "L'argent…c'est la langue internationale." On the American view of money the Marseillais replied, "Don't get me
started." The event concluded with goodbyes and an exchange of e-mail addresses—all had a good time. |
